Thank you for this piece, Rebecca. I can relate to everything you've written. I've been thinking about this subject a lot recently and I'm working on allowing myself to rest more. I think I'm doing pretty well! (Tapping this from under the duvet). But, I still want to keep challenging those deep seated beliefs. I'm reading a brilliant book atm called Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey. I'd highly recommend. The author describes it as "...a battle cry, a guidebook, a map for a movement, and a field guide for the weary and hopeful." Her work is rooted in black liberation. https://thenapministry.com/
I’m so pleased it resonated with you and I’m equally as pleased you’re having a restful Sunday too ☺️ Thank you so much for the book reco! I haven’t heard about Trisha Hersey and I love that description. It’s going on my list.
I agree with everything you’ve said. I was certainly guilty for the longest time of only resting once I’ve finished something. Finished cleaning the house, finished ironing, finished working, finished decorating the house. But that meant that I was never finished. The house always needs cleaning. There’s always washing and ironing to do. Work never ends and don’t get me started on decorating the house 🤣
Yes! I'm a massive completed/finisher too. I really struggle with leaving something undone. I love that you’ve said ‘the work never ends’ that is something I’ve realised. The more you do the more there is to do. Especially when it come to decorating 😀 hope you’ve downed the paint brush and are enjoying your Sunday. P.S I love your Substack. Reading your posts is like an act of rest in itself.
I struggle with balancing the ideas of work-life balance (clocking off on time) and the fact that so many other people aren't doing this/feel like they can't.
... How did you find Carrie Soto is back?
Love the bit about making rest a habit, I feel like I've found a few ways to do this too and it feels so important to hang on to!
It’s a tough one. I think suffering burnout has made me more aware of the need to build in rest. Much more than I ever was before. I didn’t enjoy Carrie Soto as much as her other books. But once I got going I was intrigued to see if Carrie would change. Have you read it?
Definitely. When I start to feel guilty about rest I try and find out why I think that way. Is it, like you said, other people or societal pressure or is it what I really think. Almost always the guilt is coming from other places.
Great piece, thank you. I've just finished writing a little course on how to rest, aware of the irony of working hard on it when I should have been resting 😂 although I have got better at it and catching up on Substacks with a dog curled up on my lap is exactly my idea of a good lazy Sunday afternoon. With naps! 🙏🏻
Love that you’re catching up on your substacks with a dog too! A course on how to rest sounds perfect for the world right now. There is something wonderful in getting so in the flow with creating a course to help others that you’ve forgot to rest yourself. Hope you took a good long break when you finished 😀
Napping dogs & Substacks are a good combo! & thank you - I have the week off - now I can practice what I preached in the course! Good to meet you & enjoy your Sunday 😊

I love Tricia Hersey so much 💚
Yay! I'm really appreciating her work. (Thanks for flagging I'd incorrectly spelt her name too. Have corrected)
Whoops I did it too!

You’re so right! It’s never ending sometimes. We’ve had a lovely Sunday, thank you. Hope you have too!
Oh thanks so much! That means a lot. I’m so pleased you enjoy reading the posts 🥰
Lovely Rebecca!

I guess it just requires filtering out what everyone else is doing!
I haven't read it but I've heard mixed reviews.
